The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme offers documentation grants that support the preservation of living material knowledge systems at risk of disappearing.

Projects must focus on topics with a clear material dimension, ensuring that any intangible cultural elements—such as dance, performance or music—are connected to the physical objects and practices that shape them. Proposals exploring ecological knowledge must also demonstrate a direct link to material and cultural practices. The programme does not support documentation of food production alone but welcomes projects that examine endangered foodways through the tools, objects and materials involved in preparation, sharing and consumption.

Benefits
- The programme provides two categories of grants.
- Small grants offer up to £20,000 for projects lasting up to one year, while large grants provide up to £100,000 for work carried out over two years.
- Both funding streams aim to enable thorough and ethically grounded documentation of knowledge systems still practiced today but facing the threat of decline or disappearance.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must operate within a Principal Applicant and Co-Applicant model.
- The Principal Applicant leads the overall management and coordination of the project, while Co-
- Applicants contribute significant expertise and share responsibility for the project’s development and delivery.
- There are no nationality restrictions, but at least one applicant must be affiliated with a suitable host institution such as a university, NGO, museum or archive.
