GEF Small Grants Programme in Kenya

The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) under UNDP Kenya is now accepting applications for its 2025 funding cycle, offering support to local groups working at the intersection of environmental conservation and community development.

.

This funding opportunity empowers communities to act locally while contributing to global environmental goals. Grants of up to USD 50,000 are available to advance initiatives that conserve ecosystems, restore degraded lands, build climate resilience, or integrate sustainable livelihoods into environmental action. The programme emphasizes inclusive approaches, recognizing the value of community knowledge, women’s participation, and youth leadership in driving lasting change.

.

The Small Grants Programme is managed through a national structure that includes a National Steering Committee (NSC) composed of representatives from civil society, academia, government, and the private sector. The NSC plays a vital role in guiding program strategy, approving funding decisions, and strengthening partnerships to amplify the reach and impact of local efforts.

.

In addition to project funding, the call includes the opportunity for individuals active in the private sector—especially those with expertise in biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, indigenous rights, or community development—to join the National Steering Committee. These appointments aim to deepen the programme’s connections to diverse sectors and enhance strategic direction.

.

Those selected will play a role in shaping Kenya’s small grants program and contribute to a more equitable, resilient future for communities and ecosystems alike.

.

Eligibility:

  • The initiative aims to strengthen grassroots action by investing in projects led by indigenous peoples, community-based organizations, NGOs, and other local entities, to protect biodiversity, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and promote sustainable land use.
