The GEO Mountains Small Grants Call offers an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to advance mountain monitoring, data generation and information sharing across some of the world’s most critical mountain regions.

This funding call prioritises projects focused on the Andes, Central Asia, East Africa, the South Caucasus and the Hindu Kush Himalaya, with a particular interest in initiatives that consolidate existing knowledge or introduce transformative research capacities for sustainable mountain development. By supporting work that strengthens data systems and analytical understanding, the programme aims to enhance long-term resilience and decision-making in these environmentally and socially vulnerable regions.

Each selected project may receive up to CHF 10,000, with up to two projects per region envisaged. Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis, with a strong preference for proposals that leverage existing funding or resources to increase the scale and impact of their activities. Projects may run for up to fourteen months, with all activities required to conclude by August 2027. This timeframe encourages focused, practical work that can deliver measurable outputs within a reasonable period.

Eligibility:
- Eligibility requirements emphasise the importance of expertise, collaboration and contribution to the broader GEO Mountains community.
- Applicants must maintain complete and up-to-date profiles in the MRI Expert Database and must join the GEO Mountains network if selected.
- The call also encourages active involvement of early-career researchers and scholars from developing countries, recognising the value of inclusive participation in strengthening global mountain research.
