The Social Science Research Council is inviting applications for its Individual Research Fellowship Program to enhance the quality and visibility of independent African peacebuilding research both regionally and globally, while making peacebuilding knowledge accessible to key policymakers, practitioners, and research centers of excellence in Africa and around the world.
.
Prospective IRF applicants may submit research proposals addressing diverse themes related to peacebuilding, governance, and development in conflict-affected contexts, including areas such as artificial intelligence and environmental security, climate change and energy transitions, justice and leadership, migration, economic and gender dimensions of conflict, transnational threats, digital governance, humanitarian intervention, inequality, and inclusive development.
.
Other focus areas include political transitions, food security, public health, cultural and artistic contributions to peace, and the role of natural resources and global alliances in shaping peacebuilding efforts across Africa.
.
In 2026, up to nine individual fellowships will be awarded at a maximum of $12,000 each. The program is designed to promote thought leadership, capacity-building, and the production of evidence-based knowledge that informs both regional and global peacebuilding discourses.
.
Fellows commit to six months of field-based research followed by three months of analysis and writing, from July 2026 to March 2027. During this period, they will participate in two mandatory APDD workshops in July and January, held across different regions of Africa, to refine their research designs, present findings, and enhance accessibility of their work through publications and networking opportunities.
.
Fellows may also contribute to international journals, books, blogs, or podcasts while gaining skills to advance their academic or professional careers. Additionally, participants will become part of a vibrant network of African scholars and practitioners, benefitting from mentorship by senior scholars and opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration.
.
Eligibility:
- Applicants be African citizens residing in an African country.
- Academics must hold a full-time faculty or research position in an accredited African institution and possess a PhD obtained no earlier than January 2016.
- Practitioners must have a master’s degree obtained before January 2021, with at least five years of proven full-time research and professional experience in peacebuilding-related fields.
