Jan Patočka Fellowship Program

The Institute for Human Sciences is seeking applications for its Jan Patočka Fellowship Program to provide support to scholars in all academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

.

It welcomes scholars exploring the philosophical, societal, economic, geopolitical, and historical dimensions of the theme, drawing on Patočka’s critical work on the history of philosophy, modernity, (post)colonialism, war, technology, and the dialectics of enlightenment and invites projects that present fresh perspectives on the idea of (post-)Europe and its relevance in contemporary debates.

.

The fellowship offers selected candidates the opportunity to spend five consecutive months at the IWM in Vienna between September 2026 and June 2027 to pursue their research projects. Postdoctoral scholars who have defended their PhD by the application deadline will receive a monthly stipend of EUR 3,300, while doctoral candidates currently enrolled will receive EUR 2,750 per month.

.

All living and research-related expenses, including travel, accommodation, health insurance, utilities, local transport, telecommunications, and literature or conference fees, must be covered by the fellows themselves. The fellowship period always begins on the first day of the first month and ends on the last day of the final month.

.

The IWM provides visiting fellows with office space, internet access, in-house research facilities, and administrative support at no additional cost. Fellows become part of the IWM intellectual community and are invited to participate in institute activities throughout their stay.

.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral program or must have obtained their PhD within four years preceding the application deadline, not before 10 February 2022.
  • Only one fellowship application per academic year is permitted, and former resident fellows must wait two academic years before reapplying, with no option to reapply for the same program previously awarded.
