STEG Larger Research Grant Program (6th Call)

The Structural Transformation and Economic Growth invites applications to the sixth call for proposals for Larger Research Grants (LRGs).

.

The opportunity focuses on research examining systemic patterns of structural transformation and growth in low-income countries, or more specific topics including data and measurement, firms and industrial policy, labour and household-level transformation, agricultural productivity, trade and spatial frictions, and the role of the public sector.

.

Other areas of interest may not fit cleanly into any of the themes but are centrally relevant to STEG and are also encouraged. Research in middle-income countries will be considered if it informs growth processes or policies in low-income countries.

.

STEG is also focused on three cross-cutting issues that are relevant to many areas of structural transformation, including the six research themes, namely gender, climate change and the environment, inequality and inclusion.

.

Funding Information

  • The programme offers LRGs of up to £100,000 to fund research assistance, data collection or purchase, and teaching buyouts for principal investigators and co-investigators.
  • These grants also support travel to field sites, even when secondary data is used, recognising the importance of field visits and engagement with policymakers, particularly for researchers who lack prior experience in the countries they intend to study.
  • For projects with extraordinary data collection costs in low-income countries, the funding cap may be relaxed to accommodate specific needs. Funding decisions are expected within five months of the deadline and successful applicants must sign contracts within one month of receiving the final decision. Projects are intended to be completed within 24 months.

Eligibility:

  • The call encourages global participation, with applications welcomed from researchers worldwide and a strong emphasis on collaborations between researchers from lower- and higher-income countries.
  • PhD students may apply but are advised to do so with senior collaborators to strengthen feasibility and credibility and those applying as principal investigators must submit a supervisor support letter within the stipulated timeline.
