The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) has announced a new funding opportunity focused on empowering communities in Mohlaletsi, Sekhukhune District, Limpopo Province to support innovative, community-driven projects that contribute to sustainable development and environmental resilience.

Grant amounts range from a minimum of US$25,000 to a maximum of US$35,000, and projects must be completed within 12 months from the signing of the agreement.

The 2026 call prioritizes proposals that address one or more key thematic areas. In the area of food security, projects that empower women to promote dietary diversification through improved, resource-efficient agricultural techniques will be favored. Initiatives that establish cooperative food gardens at schools and communal spaces, and promote nutrition among smallholder households through locally grown, healthy foods, are strongly encouraged.

Under agroecology and climate-resilient agriculture, the focus is on empowering women and youth to participate in sustainable agricultural value chains that use renewable energy and water-saving technologies. Projects that enhance agro-biodiversity, strengthen seed production systems, and improve resilience to climate shocks will receive priority consideration.

The program also supports innovative sustainable land management practices aimed at restoring degraded cropland and rangeland. Communities are encouraged to develop agroecology-based food production systems such as agroforestry and sustainable harvesting of wild plants. Soil and water management technologies, particularly those designed by youth, will be highly valued for their role in promoting environmental stewardship.

Fodder production is another priority area, with emphasis on developing efficient systems for planning, cultivating, processing, and distributing quality fodder to local farmers. Similarly, para-veterinary services that enhance animal health through disease surveillance, vaccination programs, and farmer education are considered vital to building resilient livestock systems and improving rural livelihoods.

Eligibility:
- Eligible applicants include registered non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and communal enterprises led by community members, particularly women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
- Each organization may submit only one proposal, and projects must go beyond single events or workshops to demonstrate long-term community impact.
- Private companies, government institutions, and organizations with pending GEF SGP reports or ongoing grants are not eligible.
